Oral Pathology

Your mouth is normally lined with pink, smooth tissue. Sometimes, you, your dentist, or your physician may notice a bump or discoloration on this tissue. If so, Dr. Stobaugh and Dr. Metz are well trained to identify the source of your symptoms and determine if additional studies may be necessary- for example a simple tissue biopsy that can be performed in our Houston oral surgery office.

If you notice an area that is discolored (red, black, or white); a lump or thick area of skin; a sore that won’t heal or keep getting larger, please don’t delay in seeing us for an evaluation. Normally, these are benign changes in the tissue that can be quickly diagnosed. However, these small signs, if left untreated, may lead to oral cancer and can require extensive treatment.

We recommend that you see your dental care provider every six months for an oral cancer screen exam along with your regular cleaning appointments. Learn more about oral cancer here.
