What is an oral and maxillofacial surgeon?

Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons (OMS) are medical specialists who treat conditions, injuries, and defects of the mouth, teeth, jaws, and face. We are comprehensively trained in our specialty area and have completed a four-year hospital residency surgical program to achieve our credentials. Dr. Metz has also completed their medical doctorate (MD) - the same degree that your family physician earned - and has chosen to specialize in oral and maxillofacial surgery.

As Oral Surgeons, we are uniquely qualified to administer various levels of pain control, from local anesthesia to general anesthesia. In most cases, patients can receive surgical care while being comfortably sedated in our office - eliminating the need for time consuming and costly hospital admissions.

Like other medical specialists, Oral Surgeons can elect to take a national exam to become board certified. We (Dr. Stobaugh and Dr. Metz) are diplomates of the American Board of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery - and we are one of the very few select teams in the greater Houston area that can make that statement.
